Good design isn’t about following every trend — it’s about knowing what to filter out.
Trends are called trends for a reason. They move. They shift. They pass. And while there’s nothing wrong with loving a trend and bringing it into your space, there’s also nothing wrong with ignoring it completely. Liking something because it’s “in” is very different from liking something because it feels right to you. One is pressure. The other is instinct.
Somewhere along the way, design became obsessed with the future. Will this be timeless? Will I still like this in ten years? Is this a safe choice? Designers say it. Clients repeat it. And suddenly, the present moment gets ignored. But the truth is simple: if you like it now, that matters. You’re the one living with it. Not the trend cycle. Not the internet. Not some imaginary version of yourself years from now.
A space doesn’t need to age perfectly to be successful. It needs to feel good. It needs to reflect who you are — not who you think you’re supposed to be. Some of the most loved interiors were never designed to be “timeless.” They were designed honestly.
This is where filtering comes in. Just like tinted lenses soften harsh light and reduce glare, good design filters out the noise — expectations, rules, trends, and opinions that don’t serve you.
There are no real rules in design. Only decisions. And the best ones are the ones made without fear of missing out, without designing for approval, and without constantly looking ahead. Stop designing for later. Stop waiting for permission. Choose what you love, trust your eye, and let your space exist in the present — exactly as it is.
That’s not bad design.
That’s clarity.
